Artist Statement

Now a printmaker, I began my art studies in sculpture. Like in sculpture, I am attracted to the technical processes and problem solving involved in printmaking. Working primarily in intaglio and lithography, I am interested in experimenting with textures and making subtle variations among my prints.

My current work is influenced by my rural background and my fascination with nature. I find inspiration in the internal imagery of flora and fauna, combining the two in their realistic and abstract forms to create whimsical scenes. I'm drawn to the ability of the images to take on a sense of fragility and new life in their microscopic and stylized appearance. These delicate images provide me with a base for experimentation, particularly with a pasting technique called chine-collé, where several layers of prints on fine Japanese papers are layered on top of each other. Currently my love of both sculpture and printmaking is moving my practice to more experimentation. I am working on a series of 'Paper Plates', first printing on fine Japanese papers and then moulding them with fabric over real plates to create intricate objects.
