The image of the home is one that most of us share. It is embedded in our subconscious and grows beyond the objects, the structure and the space. It becomes a container that can be both restrictive and at times empty. It stores emotion, lost time and ultimately mirrors the values of the broader community. Willans explores this concept in her recent work. Utilizing and manipulating the tradition of realism painting in Canada, Willans renders repetitive, day-to-day experiences in psychologically-charged colour. Images of a building site, a traditional dining room and a dilapidated house have a “lived in,” vintage quality. The paintings present a tension between presence and absence, new and old. In a wider sense, the works address concerns of social disconnection and disillusionment, a growing alienation of the middle class and cyclical behaviour.
